Session 8: Cleaning it up

Today was my last day with my mentor and the dance company. The entire time that I was there, I realized that the choreographers that came in to teach the crew choreography pieces focused on putting people in certain spots and cleaning things up. When they "cleaned things up", they put their focus entirely on punctuality and precision of the movements. Everything they did today focused solely on making the sets that were out together look as clean as it could be. Speaking of cleanliness, I danced with two other crew members for the final part of my project. I realized that I needed some cleaning up myself, but I'm saving that knowledge for the future. Overall, today was yet another learning experience and I got to learn a little more from the way the choreographers handled the crew.

Session 7: Being a Leader

Today was a memorable today. I was asked a lot of questions from my mentor about my past experiences in the sessions and the question that hit me the most was "Do you see yourself leading this company?" I really had to think about this one because after witnessing all the practices and how my mentor conducted them, I knew that leadership wasn't my forte yet. So I honestly answered and I said that I need to learn and even in that position of leadership I still will learn. From that, my mentor commended me for my humilty, saying,"That's what I look for in a leader." Today, I learned that being a leader for a dance company didn't just mean to be strict and by the book. To be a leader meant to be understanding of the people you work with and to never stop learning, even if you're the teacher. For the rest of the time I watched them practice for their upcoming competition, and I saw what my mentor was talking about as he directed them. He kept himself humble and understood the people that were practing yet they never were off track or too serious about their work.

Session 6: Conditioning

In this session, I was shown how a dance crew conditions themselves for a competition. They went through everything that they learned from their first practice, and since I was able there myself, I can see how they've grown in preparation for the up and coming competition. It's also helped me understand the difficulty of preparing for a competition. In the past sessions, I remember that I learned some of the choreography that they were going to use, but I found myself forgetting most of what I learned. If I were to be in their shoes, I would struggle keeping up and preparing. This has been a pivotal learning experience for me and I definitely will take this home.
